I apologize beforehand for being academicaly inept and intellectually stifled, putting forth this rather childish querry...I am about to complete my BBA.LLB in the coming year and hence anxious at landing in some kind of monetarily rewarding job. But this ever engulfing economic slowdown seems to be taking its toll on evry industry.....so my query to all n evryone is whether this slowdown will adversely affect the future of graduates like me....law firms stop hiring, legal departments of corporates stop hiring etc. If so happens then whr do we go from here, as litigation is not evrybody's cup of tea

Hey Partha, while I trust the legal luminaries present here would be able to give you more insights on the present employment scenario n strategies to cope with the same, may I offer you a little offbeat suggestion more on motivational/inspirational/philosophical side??

Grab the book 'Rainmaker--John Grisham' ,if you already have not read it...it's the story of Rudy Baylor...a young guy about to graduate from law school who shares your various concerns about future & prospective employment. Rudy Baylor maintained his wry sense of humor when almost anything that could go wrong goes wrong ...that includes getting dumped by his long time girl friend, ending up in loads of debt he took to buy gifts for her & to top it up his gifts are stolen & he loses the law firm job he was counting on to repay those debts & build a life for himself ... He battles all these circumstances in the course of the novel. He always has a rich internal dialogue going on.In the most mundane/pathetic situation his mind keeps him entertained. That makes him one of the most endearing n loved protagonist of all times for me.The Rainmaker is the story of his struggles & final triumph as no less than a rainmaker by following a path not travelled by most lawyers (though I'm afraid that involves litigation which you've already declared as not being everyone's cup of tea).

I think if nothing it will entertain you & you can identify a lot with him...I definitely did during my law school days. All the best.

Thanx Ritu for your kind words. I will certainly read the book as soon as I lay my hands on it. To be honest I always confused "Rainmaker" with "Rainman"(thought tht the former was a novel by John Grisham & latter a movie which was an adaptation of the former) an Oscar winning movie starring Tom Cruise & Dustin Hoffman(always been a movie buff and preferred screen adaptations rather than literature). And now I understand tht I should have been doing otherwise. Plunging into litigation has always excited me but the fear(when would I break even) still plagues me. You are into academics, which is something that interests me as well!

Partha, I don't want to sound harsh but facts of life are there to see unless you use your eyelids to block them.

When the economy was shifting the gears forward, the weavers in Chirala,AP had to....(Sorry I don't want to mention here) Simillar was the fate of farmers in Vidharba, Maharastra. Nobody worried about them; only the press filled the pages with news and TV channels got their TRPs

Now when the economy is shifting gears backward the white collars and professionals are affected.

It happens.

If a truck driver recklessly drives and kills people, the law will punish him. But if policy makers and politicians make reckless decisions and ruin the economy,.... well, I want to haul them before courts but, as you said it is not my cup of tea.

The only consolation I can offer to you is please read WHO MOVED MY CHEESE. Just because you study law you need not make a living by joining a law firm. Nothing prevents you from becoming a chief minister. In this country even illterate housewife can achieve that.

Dear Mr. Partha,

From Bubaneswar to Pune Law College seems a long haul. The economic Boom or Wall Street depression should not seriously affect a working man who wants to make living practicing law or running mobile coffee shop on the road side in Pune, Bombay , Kalyan or Lonawalla.

It is really interesting how people react to a request for advice, depending upon their own knowledge and experience. A person with a Booker ambition advises you read a few books on literature, and another to see a few films of International repute. There is also a political hue in another that blames truck drivers and tells you about farmer’s suicide. I knew many of those farmers who came to Madras with a hundred thousand rupees to play rummy in several clubs that boasted of well equipped bar. The farm laborers who were ready to work for five or ten rupees a day are spoiled by indulgent politicians and gun toting Red reformers that my friends could neither play their Gin-Rummy nor pay back their agricultural debts. The White collared bankers with their penal interest take away their large bungalows driving them to suicide.

My knowledge is limited to criminal trial cases in subordinate courts for 25 years and another active practice in the appellate side of the Madras High court before bungling in a little bit of acting. To day I am going to appear as witness in Rent Control O.P for eviction and fair rent. This happens after another 22 years of film acting and retirement. I could add some more information to what my friends have already provided. Keep in touch by Ryze PM.

7 Th Thinking Hat, if u were trying to frighten me, then I must say u have been successful. Comparisions with weavers in A.P. & farmers in Vidarbha was pretty stark.

Do u really think tht whn the economy is going down the weavers n farmers r not going to be affected?
OR
Do u want evryone to burn because everyone to burn because we have been an insensitive lot in the past?

Partha, you missed my point. I only meant change happens and challanges do arise; we think of threats as formidable only when it happens to us. When we see it on TV it is just one more news.

The calamty is man made by stupid politicians who exposed our country to this unwanted risk. They opened the economy for all rats and bandicoots to invade instead of limiting to infrastutcure which would seed and catalyse devolopment. Being a law student you must think about designing suitable legal framework for the country so that man in the street is not a causalty of political mistakes.

I did not frighten you. It speaks about your state of mind. Why only Chirala and Vidarbha called your attention? Why not the Cheese and Chief Minister stuff? You, suffering from any anxiety problem?

'It is really interesting how people react to a request for advice, depending upon their own knowledge and experience. A person with a Booker ambition advises you read a few books on literature, and another to see a few films of International repute. '

:-D :-D... Charu you are right in that people will answer based on their own experience & outlook & what works for them...& I honestly think good books help shape one's thoughts(recission or no recession) & response to the challenges n questions that life happens to throw at one...maybe it might look odd to you but I've never failed to find a book which applies to my particular circumstances at particular time & I enthusiastically recommend books to people though there are hardly any takers most of the times....but I keep trying.....who knows maybe one day someone somewhere might take up my suggestion..this was a question pertaining to recession...when a girl on other network on Ryze confessed about her suicide attempts..this is what I did...recommended a book..kinda hilarious but i was being very sincere....n I assure you that I don't have any booker aspirations whatsoever cos I can't write to save my life.

Soeb it would be swell if you could add a few details about the movies recommended & why do YOU think they are worth watching.

Partha with all these recommendation you might consider taking an odd year or two off & bide time reading the books & watching the movies till the recission subsides. (heck I wanted to recommend one more book (& this one makes a person totally fearless) but won't lest everyone who has so far not thought of me as loony & eccentric do that) ....maybe we could suggest a few songs to listen to as well...okay just kidding.

Teaching is almost recission proof...but I'm afraid you can't make as much money teaching as you can make lawyering...but in any case the money in teaching is comfortable though not spectacular & there are other perks like a lighter work load ...calm yet upbeat work environment & more...if you don't want to jump in full time you can even consider teaching as visiting faculty while practising law.

& I was kinda hoping that you read the Rainmaker n share your thoughts on it with me....i think you will like it honestly...n you can also pick up a few strategies from Rudy Baylor on hunting for a legal job n I tell ya he does plenty of that in the book n frames some pretty lengthy n complex strategies...I know yr circumstances are not dire...but his were n so he is kinda pro in hunting for jobs. (which makes my suggestion not so impractical afterall)

There is a movie based on Rainmaker too starring Matt Damon(though of course its not Rainman) & I absolutely hated it...I guess it failed to capture the entire internal dialogue that goes inside Rudy Baylor's head..n which is what made the book my favorite...it protrayed the courtroom thriller part well but it it din't work for me on a whole.

Do you have placements cell in your Law sthe way we have them in B-schools??

P. Mohan, it seems you are fond of assupmtions. So, let me have the luxury of presenting a few of mine without being personal

Firstly, your ability to shoot comments about people's apparent psychological state, at blitzkreig speed likely through a broadband connection, while remaining cushioned in state-of-the-art ergonomically designed chair in an air-conditioned environment, MAY be remotely attributed to the so called SENSELESS OPENING UP OF INDIAN ECONOMY!!!!

Secondly its human nature to react only when struck (remember "Response to Stimuli")

Thirdly an economy cannot grow on the basis of INFRASTRUCTURE alone.

And a few inferences......
* Its not the law which is lacking but the implementation.
* You love the color..... RED!
* John Foppe is an all-inspiring character

thnk you for the encouragement!!!

It seems tht I have seen the movie starring Matt Damon, & correct me if I m wrong, in end after winning the first case, a monumental one, the protagonist leaves it all to become a faculty member at some local law school owing to ideological reasons!

Yes we do have a Placemnet Cell in our college & placements in the last two years have been pretty encouraging. Our alumni can be found in the premier law firms & corporate houses as well as not-so-impresive LPOs of the country. The pay-package stood at a handome average of 4.2 lakh/annum. However the placements have never been 100% owing to our large numbers.

Teaching seems to be exciting me more now..........

~~Yup & nope...he wins the case, a monumental one alrite but leaves it all to become a farmer not a faculty member...hey c'mmon the job of being a faculty aint that simple that you can call it giving up all :-p...in fact becoming a faculty is not giving up all but getting into all...I told you about the good part of teaching...but then again there's a big part of it which is very ugly...here you can find people with the biggest egoes (in a very bad sort of way) & petty bahavior...ego (bad waala ego...there's another good waala healthy ego )+ pettiness + lots of time hanging in hands makes people's personality seriously fucked up & an environment which can't give you the feel of that you've given it up all...& then there are issues like a fool with a ph.d. is > a non ph.d who can actually teach very well....it requires Rudy Baylor like survival instincts ( chatting with oneself to keep amused when the environment becomes too shitty to respond in any other way) to survive in the hallowed halls of academics.

Partha why don't you do a survey n ask the lawyers present here how bad the recession has actually hit them if at all?? Will give you more first hand information about the impact of current scenario...I mean I keep hearing about recission but so far personally I've not felt any impact ( so far being the key word here)...if it wasn't for the newspapers I wouldn't have known that there's a slowing down in economy etc.

'Ritu, just out of curiousity n me being a novice ryzer, is it often tht people try reap apart each other's opinions on the forum? Jus kidding'

Nopes Partha, people only try to be helpful here ...only that it can sometimes look like they are ripping one apart but they have only good intentions ( isn't everyone replying to your query so enthusiastically & earnestly??; Do you think we are being paid for it?? just kidding...so the wise thing is to take up whatever is useful & maybe just enjoy(?) reading the other stuff & then ignoring it.)...maybe the view can be drastic ...you can accuse Ryzers of lotsa silly n bizarre behavior but being mean aint one of them, me thinks.

you asked why i suggested viewing three
films.

the three films i mentioned are about
people at the crossroads of difficult
decisions in tough circumstances and
may help our young friend to look at
the big picture.

one of the films is set at Harvard Law
School btw.

also i generally find it stimulating
to watch very good films when i am
stressed by a decision making process
and i felt the therapy may work for
our young friend too.

i hope you find my reply satisfactory.

i like your good habit of asking to

Interesting question.

Economic slowdown will (if it has not already started to) impact one's consumption habits and to an extent lifestyle. In my opinion, it will not have any perceptible impact on people with deep pockets. The telltale signs of the impact are already visible in sectors such as banking and financial services, BPO industry and stock markets. Prices, in general, have gone up.

That aside, legal field is an evergreen field, and more so during times of trouble. Law firms and corporate legal departments may just require people to take up cases that involve credit defaults, legal disputes related to layoffs, non-payment of salaries, arrears, etc. I don't think that the economic slowdown will have any great impact on legal field.

Hello fellow ryzers, thought of bothering u yet again, there have been reports bout LPOs going on a hirin spree. but do LPOs provide an environment where one can grow intellectually? Is the work done in LPOs amounts to mere data entry? In the event of foreign law firms coming to India will outsourcing go for a spin? Does LPO offer a bright future?

partha,

personally, I am of the opinion that intellectual growth in so far as law is concerned only happens when you are abreast of the day to day developments. For that one has to read prolifically. it is true for me and may be for many many others too that unless there was a need or urgency they won't read. such prolific reading can only happen if you are either practising law or teaching law. I have seen a vast majority of my friends who took on employment after their degree or after couple of years of practice crib about there being no intellectual development scope. Even in terms of money, though they might even earn twice as much as a fresh lawyer, ultimately there is a point beyond which one cannot be paid, while there is no maximum cap for a practising lawyer. But yes, patience and perseverence are the keys, which many of us lack or are forced to discard due to societal pressures.

I aint the one to dole you advise as I am no Lawyer. But an anecdote I would like to recall.. The other day I was reading "Only the paranoid survive" by Andy Grove.

While Chairman/MD/CEO of Intel, the first thing Andy Grove did was to call the Legal Team in and tell them "What is the Legal team here for... to sue people"... So Intel sued Zilog, Then Intel sued AMD .. then Intel sued some more...

The rest is history..

The opinion on whether working in LPO is challenging enough for young lawyers is divided...some people regard working there as being a mere glorified Law clerk but some others regard it as getting exposure to US Laws which has its own unique benefits...at the end of the day its how you yourself look at it n whether find it stimulating enuff or not...different strokes for different folks...what some might find boring to others might be the most interesting profession..n i believe one can create one's own intellectually stimulating environment anywhere. People regard my own profession of teaching monotonous, boring & not at all challenging...but i certainly don't agree...i can't imagine myself being anything but a teacher but there are people who come n say to me on my face...hey with your qualifications you could get a good job ( implying indirectly that teaching is a bad job!!) or you are wasting your talents (if I have any talent whatsoever it is teaching well, so actually i'm using my talent) or ok this is a good job for females (which pisses me off the most...cos I'm not into teaching cos its easy or something but for the love of it n for me its as challenging as being an astronaut thankyou very much)...so its the way LPO job cuts for you personally.

What I feel in general with reference to finding a job in recession is that one needs to scale down one's aspirations a bit when the external environment becomes a little less friendly...I mean everyone has dreams of landing up a cushy, well paid, intellectually stimulating job but life isn't what you think it's going to become-life is what it becomes. Part of it stems from choices we make, but part of it is simply an unfolding adventure that we must choose to reject or adapt to as it present itself to us..

.what I've found in my interation with youngsters is they have very high aspirations n want instant success...everything given on a platter to them...n don't want to slog it out...i could be wrong but i feel its this way with youngsters today....here's a joke about this attitude which I find very true n mildly funny

Reaching the end of a job interview, the Human Resources Person asked the young MBA fresh out of college, "And what starting salary were you looking for?"

The candidate said, "In the neighborhood of $125,000 a year, depending on the benefits package."

The HR Person said, "Well, what would you say to a package of 5-weeks vacation, 14 paid holidays, full medical and dental, company matching retirement fund to 50% of salary, and a company car leased every 2 years - say, a red Corvette?"

The MBS sat up straight and said, "Wow!!! Are you kidding?"

And the HR Person said, "Certainly, ...but you started it."

Youngsters today want it easy, probably becoz they slug it out during college days. Students at management colleges work day in n day out doing one thing or the other. 12 hour shiftsare normal for them. even law colleges like ours they keep us busy for 1/3rd of the day. sometimes we have presentation, mootcourts, mocktrial, client counselling, projects etc. After putting in such efforts, one is nt wrong if he seeks a fat package, moreover the cost of gud education is considerable.

Correct if I m wrong, during ur days u had it easy! college was not tht hectic!

As far as the joke is concerned the guy was asking for an exorbitant salary, which suggests he was misinformed or overconfident about his abilities, he shld hav researched and put forth a more acceptable and practical sum.

I genuinely think tht farming n teaching are two of the most thankless yet noblest jobs in todays time. A teacher can have suchan impact especialy during formative years. Teachers have to realise tht and shld impart life skills as well. but i also think tht teachers who r teaching professional courses shld dabble into some kind of profeesional work be4 coming into teach as this will give them a bird's eye view of the profession n also help them gain respect of students and peers alike!!!!!

Ok if I were to take up litigation then how do I start......as i have no clue......all my interships have been in law firms n coporate houses......if I were to start from Orissa High Court how do I go about it......any TRICKS OF THE TRADE FROM LITIGATORS!!!!!!!!

A very wise person said 'To expect the world to treat you fairly, because you're a good person, is somewhat like asking a bull not to attack you, because you're a vegetarian!'...just cos you worked hard in college doesn't entitle you to a cushy job...hey don't get me wrong but I guess if you indeed feel there is a recession then it doesn't hurt to take up a not so cushy job for now...struggle it out with what is available n am sure it would only be a transitory phase...I'm not against high aspirations...good if they materialise but if they don't, scaling them down n being a rookie wouldn't hurt anyone...n its more satisfying in certain ways than achieving instant success, if there is any such thing.
(my tips for job hunt during recession--1.Take the help of alumni of yr institute who are well placed; 2. Scale down the aspiration n take up whatever is available for now; 3. Try networking on Ryze...pssst lotsa lawyers around here)

'Correct if I m wrong, during ur days u had it easy! college was not tht hectic!'
~~You are wrong...okay maybe not college but C.S. is 10 times more hectic than MBA/Law...atleast to me it seemed that way n struggling with studies during c.s. gave me the strength to cope with anything else that comes up in life!( I'm like if i could survive that I can survive anything!, no kidding)

In the event of the present recessionary phase I do agree with ur comments.....but i was refering generally.....

basically the youth today is hungrier than evr before....he wants it all....thts why he puts in more....ready to sacrifice those golden early adulthood days to wee hour book-rummaging sessions......expectations r bound to be there whn one puts in so much......there r guys in our batch who have completed CS intern & some of them on the verge of completion of final as well, inspite being busy......austerity, self-contentment, serenity, balance, family-life, these words have either become obsolete or their use is considered to be a mere excuse to hide one's inability & incompetency to survive in this competitve world.

thx for the advice.....its time to stay put n fight.......

It's good that you are hungrier than ever but its quite naive to assume that only you people are slogging it out...when I was appearing in my CS finals I was also doing my law degree apart from teaching full time in one college & as a visiting faculty in another + doing CS training.

'austerity, self-contentment, serenity, balance, family-life, these words have either become obsolete or their use is considered to be a mere excuse to hide one's inability & incompetency to survive in this competitve world.'
~~These are the saddest words ive ever heard...you are confusing the means with the ends...success in life is to be achieved in order to get 'austerity, self-contentment, serenity, balance, family-life'..if these are not important to one then i dunno what is cos life is made up of these only, these are the only worthwhile things to have after everything is said n done...otherwise the success will ring hollow very soon...n words like 'survive in this competitve world.'are used only by conformists who are too scared to make their own path....nothing very great or glorious or unique about these.

Anyways my so called advice was very tentative n i really don't mind if you find it totally useless n don't use any of it...cos every person learns in life by her/his experience only ...ughhh i dunno how the discussion on recession reached here but reach here it did.

Yup 'its time to stay put n fight'...so all i'll say now is all the best...may you get whatever you set out to achieve.

It sad tht a lot of us have seem to forgotten the very essence of life n run for materialistic well-being.....but I do agree tht theres pressure n I m no BUDDHA........

I m here on this forum to learn.....learn from people like u n vijay who hav a wealth of knowlegde & experience!!!!! which can come handy during these times......

From recession to philosophy.....we did manage to create a storm in a tea-cup!!!!!!

So Partha you are no Buddha?? neither am I, though at times I fancy myself as Buddha n start preaching profound wisdoms.

Hey, no sweat I din't feel in any way that you tried to belittle my achievements(?)...I'm never hurt in a discussion...for me a discussion is a discussion n all parties involved should say whatever is on their mind, no holds barred..many times I won't agree with you & you won't agree with me but I hope we are open minded enuff not to consider it a fight. Maybe I sounded hurt/angry/sarcastic but lemme tell ya I wasn't neither....though i might sound like it cos I'm way too outspoken for my own good.

Rithu.... Buddha died of eating pork. Refer to Rampunyani who lives in Bombay and writes his columns in The Hindu. That leads me to think that prophet was a stroke wiser as he he prohibited it. I have lived nearly eighty years sfter starting on my whisky 60 years back. I feel wiser too. 30 years of practising as a criminal trial lawyer I find that one of the accused in a Murdercase where I was his lawyer on record has his statue installed in my city. After another 30 years acting in films it keeps me a pauper who spends his valuble time in Ryze network. We are all on our own. I did my law in Bombay and was enrolled in
Bombay High Court.

Charu, this is as far away from law as any post can possibly get but since it came up,well...Buddha died not of eating pork but poisoned mushroom...this is the whole story & its a very beautiful story.

A poor man invited Buddha to take meal at his home. Buddha would open his doors early in the morning and whoever would invite him first, he would go to the house.

The invitation by the poor person was accidental. The king was coming to invite him, but on the way his chariot broke down, so he was delayed. He reached there just a few minutes late. By that time Buddha had accepted the invitation of the poor man.

The king said, "I know this man, he has been trying his whole life to invite you, yet he has nothing to offer! Please reject this idea of going to his house."

But Buddha said, "That is impossible. I cannot reject the invitation. I have to go."

So he went. And his going became fatal to his body, cos in in those days the poor men collected mushrooms, dried them, and kept them for the rainy season. They used them as vegetables. Sometimes mushrooms are poisonous. And he prepared mushrooms for Buddha--he had nothing else, just rice n mushrooms.

Buddha ate the mushrooms, they were very bitter, but to say so would hurt the poor man, so he ate them all without saying anything, thanked the man and left. He died of food poisoning.

When he was asked at the last moment, "why did you accept? The king had warned you that the man is so poor, he would not be able to offer you the right food. But you didn't listen."

Buddha said, "It was impossible. Whenever truth is invited it has to accept. And he invited me with such passion and love as nobody has ever invited me-it was worth risking my life."

I am sorry. My knowledge of Indian history is very poor. I was told that Buddha was a king himself and he left his wife and kingdom,(I do not know which hurt him more) and went to contemplate and find the truth. I knew he could not find GOD. I did not find God after two accidents and five surgeries. I had my heart stopped for five hours with potassium and started again after four by passes. I had also a brain surgery and my right leg carries nichrome plates bots and nuts. All of them are Gods that keep me alive.Only thing is I do not worship them.
