Elections and Disclosures...Views: 1140

Elections are underway in many states in India. I was generally going through mails, when I was led to the site of Election Commission of India. A link there had information about the disclosure affidavits filed by the candidates in past elections. Believe me, some of these affidavits make interesting reading....

An affidavit is the solemn affirmation of facts which are relevant to the context for which the affidavit is being sworn.  As such the financial, social and educational backgrounds of the candidates become very relevant.  It is the detailed and correct affirmation of these facts which are required to be affirmed on affidavit by candidates.

In this background see some of the interesting affidavits:

L.K. Advani - He perhaps studied in the reverse order.

Sonia Gandhi - That is all that she has studied for...

Rahul Gandhi - He did nothing between School and M.Phil

Maneka Gandhi - She had double minds about JNU

On the other hand, the "tainted" leaders and those who have been in the eye of storm, have filed detailed affidavits with full disclosures.

Now that we know, we feel cheated. Had we not known, we were better off. Knowledge brings sorrow, lack of it is bliss!!

What is the Right to Information, if it cannot be used to bring about an effective change....

Re: “What is the Right to Information, if it cannot be used to bring about an effective change....”

True.

But unfortunately people do not take a long and hard look at such information before voting (if at all they do).

Often factors like caste, religion, language, and region influence electoral politics and the choices that people make.

And, again, there is not much to choose between. All the candidates appear to be made of same stuff.

Also, more than 50 percent of the population is still reeling under poverty. Though there is some improvement in the literacy rate, what we call education is anything but education, for it does not equip an individual to reason and analyse and make right choices. (The recent caste clash between two groups of students at a Law college in Chennai is a case in point.)

In such a scenario, even if a candidate sneaks in details like he had murdered so and so and earned as much through corrupt ways, it is not going to be noticed.

Sometimes, while reading the newspaper or watching the news channels, I feel depressed. I switch over to novels and music channels to change my mood. I choose to believe that things will smoothen themselves out.

While that right is happily granted to the citizens by successive governments, the netas for once would sacrifice that fundamental right in the larger interests of themselves!
