Elections and Disclosures...Views: 183

Vijay Nair

Elections are underway in many states in India. I was generally going through mails, when I was led to the site of Election Commission of India. A link there had information about the disclosure affidavits filed by the candidates in past elections. Believe me, some of these affidavits make interesting reading....

An affidavit is the solemn affirmation of facts which are relevant to the context for which the affidavit is being sworn.  As such the financial, social and educational backgrounds of the candidates become very relevant.  It is the detailed and correct affirmation of these facts which are required to be affirmed on affidavit by candidates.

In this background see some of the interesting affidavits:

L.K. Advani - He perhaps studied in the reverse order.

Sonia Gandhi - That is all that she has studied for...

Rahul Gandhi - He did nothing between School and M.Phil

Maneka Gandhi - She had double minds about JNU

On the other hand, the "tainted" leaders and those who have been in the eye of storm, have filed detailed affidavits with full disclosures.

Now that we know, we feel cheated. Had we not known, we were better off. Knowledge brings sorrow, lack of it is bliss!!

What is the Right to Information, if it cannot be used to bring about an effective change....
